The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

*WARNING THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Review:

This book is one of my favorites. It’s a combination of The Darkest Minds and Under the Never Sky, but with vampires. After reading the only vampire book I’ve ever read -- Twilight --, I didn’t think I would like another book about vampires. But, The Immortal Rules blew my mind away. From the beginning, I could tell I was going to get hooked. This book was never boring. The chapters are a bit long, but they always leave the reader in suspense, which makes it hard to put the book down. The characters in this book are all amazing. They all have their flaws, and the character development really leaves you loving the characters.

If you're like me and you like dystopian, adventure, action, fast-paced, and a dash of romance, I would highly recommend this book (and the entire series) to you. Or, to anyone who likes The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken.

Book Summary:

The Immortal Rules is about a 17-year-old girl named Allison Sekemoto who lives in a society where humans are farmed as food for vampires. Allie herself is an unregistered, meaning she survives in the Fringe (an area outside of the inner city where the vamps and their pets live, but still inside the outer wall, separating them from the outside world of Rabids). Allie and her gang of Lucas, Rat, and Stick constantly have to scavenge for food just to survive, while also trying to avoid getting caught by vamps at night.

One day, Allie stumbles upon a basement full of food outside of the outer wall and gets her gang to go after the food the following day (after she encountered a vampire and luckily got away). But, on the way back from gathering the supplies, Allie and her friends get attacked by rabids, killing Lucas, Rat, and herself (while Allie tried to save Stick’s life by leading the rabids towards her). To her luck, the vampire she encountered the other day steps up to either change her into a vampire or let her die quickly. Allie chooses to live on as a vampire, and her sire, Kanin, turns her into a vampire and teaches her all about vampire life and how to survive. He emphasizes that Allie is no longer human and that humans will always see her as a predator, a monster, a demon; and that she will forever be alone. Allie doesn’t believe Kanin and decides to go see her old friend Stick, but when she does, Stick no longer sees Allie as Allie, but as any old dangerous vampire. It isn’t clear whether Stick was the one who sold out Allie and Kanin’s hideout, but their spot is eventually exposed, and Allie and Kanin part ways. Allie walks on for days through the forest, unsure what she is looking for. Several weeks later, she finds her Hunger taking over, and kills two raider men on the road; thus, realizing that she truly is a monster.

After a few more days, she reaches a deserted town but finds out a group of humans are on a journey to find Eden, a place where there are no vampires and no rabids. Allie joins the group, as they travel during the night and sleep during the day, just like vampires. Their group leader, Jeb, is a hardcore and unemotional adoptive father of Zeke. Allison has to find a way to blend into the group without the group realizing she is a vampire. She doesn’t dare to feed off of anyone in the group as she cares deeply about them, she even goes out to find food for the group, look out for danger, and save a little girl’s life. Eventually, Ruth, a 16-year-old girl who loathes Allie, finds out Allie is a vampire and yells ‘vampire’ attracting Zeke’s attention.

Allie is cast out of the group and forced to never come back. But, as the incredibly emotionally attached vampire, Allie follows the group, protecting them from danger. When a group of raiders attacks Allie’s group, she exposes herself and saves Zeke, but isn’t able to get the others out in time. Zeke is still suspicious of Allie, but Allie helps Zeke tend to his wounds and goes with him to find the others in Old Chicago. After reaching Old Chicago, they find Jackal, Allie’s ‘blood brother’, send Darren, Zeke’s best friend, into a cage with a rabid. Zeke and Allie eventually find the rest of the group in the backstage area and rescue them. Allie tells Zeke to go bring the others to safety while she goes get Jeb, who is currently in Jackal’s tower. When she finds Jeb, Jeb is reluctant to go with her as he doesn’t trust her. After several minutes of telling Jeb the others are still alive, Jeb finally agrees to go, but turns to find Jackal standing there, watching them. Allie attacks Jackal, but he is much faster and much more skilled than she is. Jackal impales her with a wooden stick, preventing her from fighting, and throws her out of the window. Jeb then flings himself at Jackal and they plummet out of the window into the water below; therefore, killing himself too.

Allie hauls herself back through the window but is unable to move as her energy is drained and she doesn’t have any more blood to heal her wound. Zeke finds Allie on the ground unconscious with a hole in her stomach. He cuts himself open to give some of his blood to Allie. Allie sinks her fangs into Zeke, draining the life out of him, but she stops herself right before Zeke dies. Allie and Zeke flee Old Chicago to the rest of the group and continue their journey to Eden. At last, they reach Eden (or the place before Eden, as Eden is an island), after being saved by a group of humans from waves of rabids. Allie is soon discovered as a vampire, while Zeke is recovering from his surgery, and she is once again cast out. The book ends with Allie facing a bunch of rabids, on her way to finding and saving her sire from the psychotic vampire -- Sarren.
