The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

Review:

The Eternity Cure is SO GOOD and very well written! There are twists and turns that I never saw coming. My least favorite characters are Sarren (obviously) and Stick. Stick is just overly annoying, like seriously, just get over it Stick…it’s pathetic. Sarren is the villain in this story and he’s insane. My favorite character is Zeke, since he’s so sweet and brave and protective (the fictional boyfriend, haha), though I also really like Jackal because his personality is so unique and he constantly jokes around, but he's also serious and clever like the trick he played on Sarren and Allie -- making Sarren and Allie believe Jackal was helping Sarren (a strategy I thought about while I was reading the book, and when Jackal played the trick, I was like "YES! YES! FINALLY A SMART CHARACTER!").

Overall, I love this book, maybe even more than the first. It made me ride a rollercoaster of emotions, from eagerness to hatred to sadness. Sometimes even making me close the book just to soak in what I read and calm my emotions down a bit. I sometimes mentally screamed at the characters to do something and fight instead of talk so that the enemies don't get a chance to run away.

I already know Zeke will become a vampire in the next book, but that would mean he has a blood tie to Sarren, which makes me want to kill Sarren just so Zeke can be free from his tie, but we’ll see what happens!

Book Summary:

The Eternity Cure is the second book in the Blood of Eden trilogy. It begins with Allie going into a bar looking for Kanin. She tracks Kanin by following her blood tie. The tie leads her to a vampire city where instead of Kanin, Allie finds Jackal waiting for her. The two form an alliance where Jackal agrees to help Allie find Kanin if Allie helped him find the cure for rabidism.

Allie and Jackal look for the cure underground in a tunnel housing a horde of rabids. They find the lab and realize Sarren has been there and took the live Red Lung Viruses. They quickly go to New Covington, but they find the fringe quiet, with streets filled with bleeders who got the new mutated Red Lung Virus, which affects both humans and vampires.

Allie and Jackal decide to enter the Inner city through the tunnels underground, but before going underground, they stumble across a human who hasn't been infected with the new virus. The human leads them underground to his leader, which turns out to be Zeke, who has left Eden in search of Allie.

At first, Zeke is suspicious about Allie and Jackal teaming up but then agrees to help them get to the Inner City to find Kanin. Eventually, the three get to the Inner City and find Stick working as the Prince’s pet. They talk to Prince Salazar, telling the Prince that Sarren released the mutated virus. The Prince asks Sarren if that is true, but Sarren attacks the Prince and everyone in the room. Jackal and Zeke shoot a crossbow arrow through Sarren's shoulder and Sarren jumps out the window. The Prince becomes outraged at Sarren and demands Allie to find Sarren and get a cure for the new virus. Allie reasons that the only way to find and beat Sarren was to let Kanin go. The Prince eventually gives in and allows Kanin to go with Allie to find the cure. However, to ensure Allie’s group doesn't leave the city, the Prince injects Kanin with the new virus giving them 3 days to find Sarren.

In those three days, they save Zeke’s underground human group from a mob of mole men, Zeke gets the new virus from a bleeder uptop, Jackal abandons the group because he realizes the group will not win, Zeke gets too weak to continue, and they finally find Sarren in the old hospital. When Kanin and Allie reach the old hospital, they find out that Jackal has sided with Sarren and is helping him torture Allie and Kanin. Allie gets strapped to a lab table and Sarren gets ready to make her sing, aka scream. But, Jackal reveals that he was only pretending to be on Sarren's side and helps Allie get free of the straps.

Allie then fights Sarren and manages to cut one of his arms off with the help of Zeke, who actually has the cure for the new virus in his blood when he was injected with test cures in Eden. Sarren runs away, and the group head back to find the Prince and give him the cure. The Prince agrees to fulfill his end of the agreement and the group is free to go the next evening.

But, Stick, still wanting to tell Allie he is not useless and is now better than Allie, sells Zeke to Sarren, where Zeke gets tortured and eventually tells Sarren where Eden is. Sarren then kills Zeke, leaving Allie the cold monster vampires are known to be, in search of Sarren for revenge.
