The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa

Review:

The Forever Song is so good, I could literally read the entire book in one day if I didn’t have homework. It's a captivating, exhilarating, and heart-stopping book that you will have trouble putting down.

When Sarren died, I was the happiest person in the world, but Kanin’s death was a different story -- I was devastated but also heartfelt. Zeke and Allie are the best … together. Jackal is still one of my favorites as he jokes around and is annoying, but he stuck around with Allie suggesting he has a soft heart … sometimes, even though he denies it. The ending was very satisfying, but I do wish there was an epilogue or a novella since this series is just so good!

This book was once again filled with twists and turns that I never saw coming. I have to say that after reading this series, I have an entirely different view on vampires, which is a good thing. Overall, I would say this is one of my favorite series. Throughout the three books, Kagawa never disappoints. All three books were so good, I never felt bored. This series was filled with action and adventure and dystopian and topped off with a hint of romance. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who loves The Darkest Minds or Under the Never Sky or Delirium. <3

Book Summary:

The series continues with Allie becoming more and more like the ruthless killer, and more like Jackal. Allie, Jackal, and Kanin follow Sarren's trail toward Eden, but they encounter no humans to feed on as Sarren killed all the humans. When Allie, Jackal, and Kanin near Old Chicago, they decide to take a detour to find some humans to feed on. But, when they get to Old Chicago, they notice something is not right. Jackal’s minions are trying to kill Jackal. They race to Jackal’s tower to find an entire group of raiders waiting for Jackal, ready to kill him.

Allie, Jackal, and Kanin eventually make their way through the raiders, only to find a message written for Allie with a human heart lying under the message. Allie believes it is Zeke’s heart and charges up the stairs to kill Sarren. But, as always, Sarren is one step ahead and a bomb blows up the stairs, leaving Jackal and Kanin no way to cross the gap. Jackal and Kanin fend off the raiders, while Allie continues to the lab to find Sarren. When she gets to the lab, she finds that Sarren is not there, but rather a boy that looks just like Zeke. He is tied to a chair and Allie releases him, thinking Zeke was still Zeke. However, Zeke turns on Allie and attempts to kill her. He gets a crossbow shot into Allie, and Allie goes into hibernation for a few days when Kanin brings her underground.

When Allie wakes up, she and Kanin split. Kanin will go find Jackal, as Jackal is probably in hibernation as well, while Allie will face the Sarren-influenced Zeke again. When she meets Zeke at the Pit, they begin to battle. Allie eventually gets a clear shot at killing Zeke, but she can’t because she wants to see if Zeke is really still in there. She plunges her fangs into Zeke, breaking the spell Sarren put over Zeke. Zeke comes back, but is shocked he is a vampire. He puts on a blank face and responds with one word answers. Jackal then comes charging into the Pit ready to fight Zeke himself to get his minions back. Zeke gives Jackal his city back, and Jackal threatens his minions for turning against him.

The four vampires then continue their journey in a car that breaks down halfway to Eden. They encounter a tunnel filled with rabids and a truck blocking the tunnel. Allie asks whether they should see if anyone is still in the truck as a test to see if Zeke is still inside behind the blank face. He is, and they battle their way to the truck to find that Sarren has filled the truck with human blood and tells Zeke that “this is his life”. Zeke freaks out again and plasters a blank slate on again. Jackal intervenes by saying he is tired of Zeke and Allie’s whining.

Zeke and Allie then find a place to sleep for the day, and Zeke finally realizes that he can choose what kind of vampire he wants to be and that he wants to be with Allie. The next night, the four vampires head off to Eden again in a different car. They reach the gate to the checkpoint to Eden, but it is swarming with rabids. There is no way to get through the gate when there are that many rabids around. Kanin alerts the security guys and the rabids, then drives the car backward and charges toward the gate. He swerves at the last minute and everyone climbs out of the car and towards the gate. The gate opens and they enter into the checkpoint, trapping the rabids outside.

They find out that Eden has been taken over by rabids and that everyone was forced to flee the island. The guards take Allie away into a cell, recognizing she is a vampire, while Zeke, Jackal, and Kanin talk to the mayor of Eden. Eventually Allie is released and they start their mission to find Sarren on the island. They go through a maze from running away from rabids to the lab to realizing a new supervirus was created that infects humans, rabids, and vampires and can be transmitted through the air.

Jackal gets bitten by a rabid with the mutated virus and begins to weaken. They finally find Sarren aboard a barge filled with rabids infected with the new virus. Jackal flees again as he doesn’t feel like he can fight Sarren, and Zeke plunges into the water to save Caleb and Bethany, leaving Kanin and Allie to fight Sarren and stop the barge from reaching land. Kanin and Allie eventually slice Sarren’s throat, making him falling overboard.

Kanin realizes that the cure for the new virus was inside him the whole time, making Kanin sacrifice himself to the infected rabids in order to save the reset of the world from the virus. Before, jumping into the sea of rabids, Kanin tells Allie that she is a master vampire and that she is his only choice that he doesn’t regret. Kanin jumps in and Allie is devastated. They were too late.

Zeke then appears after putting Caleb and Bethany somewhere safe. They try to turn the ship away from the checkpoint by using some chain and a heavy metal barrel, but Sarren appears to still be alive and he stabs Zeke. Allie becomes furious and charges at Sarren. Zeke and Allie fight Sarren again, but just as they are about to lose, gunfire sounds from land, distracting Sarren just enough for Allie to stab Zeke and Sarren at the same time and behead Sarren. Allie forces herself to push the metal barrel into the lake, but the barge already hit land.

Jackal then comes aboard with a gun, as he was the one who fired bullets at Sarren. Jackal is still weak and begins to give up, but then Allie realizes the cure is in her blood too as she is now a master vampire.

Allie then wakes up in a hospital. Jackal is recovering from the mutated virus, and Eden is also on its road to recovery. At the end, Allie and Zeke decide to set out into the world again to give the vaccine against rabidism to the rest of the world in order to begin the world’s road to recovery.
