Review:
The overall story of this book is very, very interesting. It’s captivating and exciting and suspenseful, especially towards the end of the book. These murder mysteries are always so fun as you try to solve the case with the characters.
I give this book 3.5 stars because the beginning was quite confusing to me. It talks about the levels and types of people in Godspeed when I had no idea what/where those levels are, which levels are higher than others, what each of the levels is used for, who/what the people are/do, etc. But, by the middle of the book, I got a better picture of how the ship is structured and a better sense of the types of people on the ship, and by then, the story escalates so much and gets really really exciting.
Also, I found it annoying how Elder can take one look at someone and think “I just want to protect her.” It’s quite unrealistic and makes me so frustrated since YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HER!! HOW CAN YOU BE SO SURE SHE IS THE ONE?!
The switching perspectives between Elder and Amy gets a little confusing at times too, especially at the beginning of the book and when you put the book down in the middle of a chapter. But, after the first 10-20 chapters, you start to get used to the switching perspectives.
I do have to give props to Revis for the turn of events at the end and for making the murderer so well hidden. She also presents the characters, especially Eldest, in a way where you’re like “He must be the murderer! [few chapters later] Nope definitely not him… [another few chapters later] No wait it has to be him!” This back and forth between who is the murderer makes the reveal of the murderer so much more unexpected.
You guys should totally give this book a try, and if you guys feel like putting the book down at the beginning or even in the middle of the book, DON’T! The ending is so worth it.
And, if you’re wondering, I did pick up this book because the description sounded like the movie Passengers (I gotta admit I didn’t really like Passengers). They do have some similarities (like the waking up part and finding what’s wrong with the spaceship/uncovering lies), but other than that, the stories aren’t that similar. Passengers has a lot more romance than this book, and this book is a lot more mysterious than Passengers.
