Review:
This book is honestly written very, very nicely. The overall story is quite simple about a human girl’s paranormal romance with a revenant or undead guy. But, the way the story is described and the flow of the story is so well done this book deserves 5 stars. I felt the strongest emotions I have ever felt while reading a book, especially a book based on a girl who isn’t a superhero and who isn’t perfect. Instead, she's just like you and me. She goes to high school, she goes on dates, she reads, she parties, she does everything normal people do. The only paranormal part is the undead guy and his “family” of other undead guys, as well as the bad undead guys who fight the good undead guys (ha, too many ‘undead guys’ in this sentence).
The emotions I felt weren’t just the sweetness of Vincent and Kate, but also besides the romance, you get this hatred for Lucien and a bit for Georgia too when she didn’t listen to Kate about not seeing Lucien (ahem, I have no idea why but I felt SO annoyed at Georgia in that scene when Lucien went to burn Vincent). There’s also a fair about on teasing that goes on between all the characters, not just between Vincent and Kate, which is always welcomed in a good story.

The characters also have very unique personalities. Kate, Vincent, Ambrose, Jules, Gaspard, Charlotte, Charles, Georgia, etc., they all have their own personality. Kate might seem a bit like a damsel in distress with a protective boyfriend (Twilight anyone?), but I didn’t find that overly annoying because it’s rare that you find a main character that agrees to stay behind in a dangerous situation. I just can’t get over the fact that Kate agreed to stay at the revenant’s house with Vincent’s body, while everyone else (except Gaspard) went to fight the numa for Charles’ body. It’s rare to see this in supernatural stories (at least the ones I’ve read).
Twilight rings a bell, though this book is a million times better (but, to be honest, I don’t remember much about Twilight to compare the stories, just that I enjoyed this one a lot more). Fallen by Lauren Kate (hah, what a coincidence) also rings a bell. But, Kate, in Revenants series, is a lot more normal and less demanding than Luce in Fallen, something I actually like about Kate.

This book also teaches you a lot. I’ve never been to Paris and I don’t know a lot about French or French food, but this book really taught me a lot about Paris and French as a language and in terms of food. And, for all you guys out there, I highly recommend reading this book so you can get a sense of how to treat your girlfriends. You don’t have to go for a boring book on “How to be good boyfriend material,” this book says it all in story form! Though I will warn you, Vincent and Kate might be an ideal case, so it might not be achievable. But, I’m almost 100% sure this is what girls look for in a guy, except for those of you who don’t like romance….
This book is a pretty slow paced book, though not too slow that it gets boring, and it doesn’t have a lot of fighting or getting chased or traveling to accomplish a mission, but it is a lot about death and dying. It’s a nice book to read to get away from your sorrows or problems, especially around finals and APs. It’s also a nice break from all the high fantasy and dystopian I’ve been reading. It feels like a whole different world from reality, but a world that is still similar enough to reality that it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to set the scene, which is especially nice if you want to give your brain a break from conjuring up an entirely different world with images of castles or chimera. This book is like your second somewhat-normal life...except with your soulmate (and who wouldn't want to be with your soulmate??).
If you like romance and like a mellow story that isn’t too intense that it hurts your brain but still involves supernatural creatures, I’d give this book a try! But, if you don't like romance and you don't like love-at-first-sight, I'd run far, far away from this book.
